Are you ready to walk the dog, but have no idea where to go? We know it can sometimes be a challenge to find safe, easy to access locations to bring your dog. These are the 5 best places to walk your dog in Newport News.
Though some of these places, like Fido Field Dog Park provide water, its always important to make sure your dog has a sufficient water supply, especially in warm weather, as heat exhaustion can be dangerous and sometimes fatal.
Newport News Park
Our first choice is the Newport News Park located on the northern end of Newport News at 13560 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23603. With over 7500 acres, Newport News park is one of the largest city parks in the United States! It offers an extensive array of areas to bring your pup for some well-needed exercise including a huge network of walking trails that provide a variety of scenery including woods and water. Check out the city-provided information on the park here.
Fido Field Dog Park
This safe, fenced in dog park provides over an acre of grassy area for your dog to run and play with others. With two separate sections, it has designated spaces for both small and large dogs. It also provides covered benches, and even a water fountain for both dogs and people. You should still make sure to bring your dog its own water supply, just in case! It’s spacious, and even has its own designated parking lot to make it easy for you to get in and out. In fact it’s located just next our next favorite location! You can check it out on the city website here.
Riverview Farm Park
If your dog wants some one-on-one time, you can easily walk from Fido Field over to the Riverview Farm Park. This park provides several amenities including a two mile paved, dog friendly trail, and large grassy areas for your and your dog to enjoy. Make sure to keep your dog leashed in the park, unlike Fido Field, dogs are not permitted to be off-leash inside the park. If you have children, there is also a great playground located here, and a covered shelter for when you need a break! However, like many of these locations, make sure to bring your dog their own water supply. You can see more information about the park here.
A lesser known dog-friendly area it the Endview Plantation in Newport News, located at 362 Yorktown Rd, Newport News, VA, US, 23603, somewhat close to the Newport News Park. Dogs are not permitted inside the house, but this plantation has a large outside area where your dog can happily explore on-leash. Even though dogs aren’t permitted in the house, it is a beautiful, historical home you may want to see by yourself at some point. Look at their website here for pictures, and more information.
This trail is another one of our very favorite trails for both you and your leashed dog to enjoy. The Noland Trail is located at the Mariner’s Museum, and shares a parking lot. This nearly six mile trail provides lake views, and marked paths for all levels of fitness whether you want to jog, walk, or sprint! You can check out some reviews here at the AllTrails website. Don’t forget the water!
These are just a few of the dog-friendly locations in Newport News. While there are many others, we have experienced these five first-hand, and highly recommend them to dog lovers as safe, well-kept locations where your dog is welcomed.
